Racism is generally understood as treating someone differently or believing they are inferior because of their race or ethnicity. My comment, "I don't understand Indian," was not intended to insult anyone based on their race or ethnicity, nor was it meant to imply superiority. While I accept that it may have been poorly worded or interpreted differently than I intended, I do not believe it meets the threshold for racism.
I can understand why the staff may have considered it an OOC insult, and I accept responsibility if my wording was inappropriate. However, receiving a 10-day ban on the basis that the comment was racist feels excessive, especially when there was no malicious intent behind it.
Additionally, during the interaction captured on the bodycam, the other individual called me "madarchod" (also spelt "maderchod"), which is a highly offensive Hindi insult meaning "motherfucker" or, more literally, "one who has sex with their mother." This was directed at me during the same exchange. I'm not mentioning this to justify my own behaviour, but rather to highlight that the interaction involved offensive language from both sides.
I'm asking that the context, intent, and proportionality of the punishment be reconsidered. If my wording breached the rules, I am willing to accept responsibility for that and avoid similar wording in the future. However, I respectfully ask that the ban length be reduced, as I do not believe my comment was intended to be racist or deserving of a 10-day suspension, and would like it removed, or reduced.
